ANNOUNCEMENTS

WHAT: Film Screening: “Tie A Yellow Ribbon” Directed by Joy Dietrich. www.yellowribbonmovie.com
WHEN: Saturday, June 23rd, 2007, 8 PM
WHERE: Urban World Vive Film Festival on 34th St. AMC Theatre www.urbanworld.com
AFTER PARTY: Maxim Lounge located in the Stanford Hotel on 32nd street. (Drink specials w/movie ticket)

Written and directed by Joy Dietrich, TIE A YELLOW RIBBON is one of very few films that give realistic portrayals of young Asian-American women and stars Kim Jiang, Jane Kim (who you might have seen in Michael Kang’s smashing new movie West 32nd Street), Patrick Heusinger (see him with Alan Cumming in Sweetland), and Ian Wen.

TIE A YELLOW RIBBON that Variety has called “Engrossing and Poignant.”

Jenny Mason (Kim Jiang) is a Korean adoptee and aspiring photographer, who works as a barista at a hip cafe in NYC and keeps a safe emotional distance from everyone around her. But after being forced out of her apartment, she moves in with Bea (Jane Kim), a beautiful model who also makes straight A’s in school. Despite her pristine facade, Bea harbors insecurities, which bring down Jenny’s guard and allows a tender friendship to form. When the artist Simon (Ian Wen) enters Jenny’s world offering her a chance to truly connect, her adoptive brother Joe (Patrick Heusinger) reappears and stirs long suppressed feelings from her past.

Writer/Director Joy Dietrich creates a rich character piece exploring the complex hearts and spirited minds of today’s young Americans of Asian descent. Her nuanced feature debut holds truths in its reticence, and Kim Jiang turns in a stunning performance, balancing Jenny’s inner turmoil with her admirably strong will. Refusing to tie the yellow ribbon into a happy bow ending, Dietrich lets Jenny’s story naturally and realistically unfold, imperfections, triumphs, and hardships intact.

COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE REPORT
by Julie Cho

Too busy and need some break? Too bored? Well, come on out and join yKAN community services! On June 23rd, we are going to be at the West Side Tennis Stadium in Forest Hills, NY for “Relay for Life” to honor and support cancer patients and communities. I personally love this event! Since my college years, I have been to many different Relays as a volunteer, but words can never adequately describe "Relay for Life." You just have to experience it. It's a combination of emotions, hope, unity, perseverance, and triumph for so many cancer survivors. It is a moment of tender memories we have of those we have lost to cancer. So, would you like to join us? Do you know anyone whose life has been affected by cancer? Bring friends, family, and special ones! Bring your prayers. We will celebrate hope, honor, and remember the memories of those loved ones who lost the battle of cancer.

Upcoming June 23rd, 2007 yKAN Community Service:
Relay For Life with the American Cancer Society

American Cancer Society (ACS) Cancer Survivorship Event is on Saturday, June 23, 2007! Relay for Life is a unique celebration of hope during which teams of friends, co-workers, neighbors and families walk around a track to demonstrate their support for the fight against cancer. The event is non-competitive and open to all! A festive atmosphere prevails as team members camp out on the grounds at the West Side Tennis Stadium, Forest Hills to enjoy music (there are so many bands and entertainment ready!), food fun, entertainment, and activities while building camaraderie with fellow teammates and participants. yKAN will form a team and will be walking around the track with our banner to raise the awareness of cancer together. The festivities continue throughout the night with games, activities, raffles and prizes. Registered participants will also be given the opportunity to compete in a serving contest organized by former WTA Touring Pro, Akemi Kinoshita at the home of the former US Open! So, you tennis fans and players out there- let’s have a tennis match!! There will be live entertainment featuring DJ LoLyfe and DJ ROLI RHO, and full line up of performances by bands that were highlighted in myspace.com.

Also, the Relay event begins with a special Survivor's Lap and includes an unforgettable luminaria candle ceremony that honors survivors and remembers those who lost their battle with cancer! The luminaria ceremony will be set up by volunteers to spell "HOPE" in the large stadium. All candles will represent cancer survivors and those who are no longer with us. The luminaria ceremony will begin at 9:00pm and glow the whole stadium with hope. As a part of community service, yKAN will be volunteering to help out setting up candles, tables, chairs, hanging banners, clean up, etc. There is a minimum of 4 hours of volunteer service required in place of paying a $10 registration fee.

We need volunteers to help us with the following: registration tent, selling ACS merchandise, sell luminaria and put sold luminaria out on the field, light luminaries at night, and help people sign the Wall of Hope with encouraging messages to fight cancer.

If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail community@ykan.org in advance or call Julie at the American Cancer Society, 718-263-2225 ext. 32. E-mail me with the time you will be volunteering. Please contact me soon.

Thank you!

Community Service Recap

yKAN celebrated “Parents Day (Uh-Buh-Ee Nal) ” with Korean Community Service (KCS)’s 18th Senior Festival on Saturday, May 26th, 2007 at Flushing High School. About 1000 seniors attended the festival to enjoy Korean folk dance, a singing competition, and free health check-ups. yKAN volunteers were there to help with interpretations with health providers, giving out lunch boxes, taking survey questions and promoting KCS programs for seniors.

Special thanks to John Kim, DJ, and Julie Cho for coming out on a Memorial Day weekend to help our local seniors.

DC Trip Recap

Early saturday morning, on april 14 2007, a cozy group of ykaners took a day trip to washington dc in search of the reknown cherry blossoms. Despite the forecast we lucked out of the anticipated storm and enjoyed a day of exploring the cherry blossom festival, seeing the dc sights olong the walk to the tidal basin that is surrounded by the sought blossom, learning about the history and care of the blossom, hearing funny stories such as how a woodchuck is able to bring down a whole cherry tree, and rounding the day with sake tasting. Although few trees filled with cherry blossoms were sighted due to the end of blossom season, it was a trip to remember as we grew our friendship with each other as the cherry trees were given as a gift of friendship.

Falling for Grace Film Screening Recap

On Friday, May 18th, Sponsored by yKAN and CAPA (www.capaonline.org), Altra magazine (www.altrazine.com) presented a film screening of “Falling for Grace” to benefit the American Cancer Society. Altra magazine is featuring local Asian cancer survivors’ story in its spring issue. Directed by Fay Ann Lee, starring Fay Ann Lee, Margaret Cho, and Gale Harold, this film was at shown at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and VC Film Festival this year. It is a romantic comedy, family oriented, culturally uplifting movie that everyone should watch! Director Fay Ann Lee was there to answer questions from the audience.

For more information about this MUST SEE MOVIE, please visit: www.myspace.com/fallingforgracemovie and show your support! Congratulations to Director Fay Ann Lee, Nancy Moran (Altra), Bibs Teh (CAPA), and Julie Cho (yKAN) for making this event a great success!

Exactly a month after Virginia Tech incident, on Wed., May 16th, a group of fellow Korean American community organizations and yKAN formed together to talk about the issue of mental health in the Korean community. The forum had three highly informative panelists, Dr. Dong Soo Kim (Clinical Psychologist), Ms. Seon Ah Ahn (Korean American Family Services Center), and Ms. Karina Kim (Ph.D Candidate and Student Counselor at Stony Brook University). They touched upon the examples of negative experiences of adopting the cultural and social traits of another group and how the suicidal rate is going up among Korean American students. With 90 attendees, many key issues were addressed; however, this is only the beginning of what needs to be a continued effort to bring greater awareness for the issues of mental health in our community.

We thank Won Kyung Lee at KALCA for taking the lead to present this important presentation. Despite the rainy weather, many thanks to our yKAN members who came out to the forum.

Thanks,
Julie Cho
