MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT by Julie Cho
Dear yKAN members,
yKAN decided to collaborate with as many Asian community organizations as possible to celebrate May’s National Asian American and Pacific Islander’s Heritage month.
To follow-up on our April GM’s “W32nd Street” Film Panel, yKAN sponsored TKS’s “Making of W32nd Street” Film Panel this month. We congratulate Director Michael Kang and his team on the success of their movie at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival!
Thanks to Citi’s donation of 100 Mets Tickets for Asian Night at Shea, more than 80 friends of yKAN were able to enjoy the game and had a great night out!
yKAN had a booth set up at the 28th Annual CAPA Festival in Union Square this past Sunday. We were able to outreach and recruit more members by telling them about yKAN. Thanks to H-mart’s continuing support, we were able to introduce Korean ramyun at the festival. Proceeds have been collected to fund our community service event projects.
We are also excited about the new launch of the Asian American magazine, Altra (www.altrazine.com). Based in New York, multiple stories of our yKAN events are going to be profiled in the next issue. We also applaud their community support with the local Asian cancer survivors. Sponsored by yKAN and CAPA (www.capaonline.org), Altra will present a film screening event to benefit the American Cancer Society's Asian programs in NYC (www.cancer.org).
The tragic massacre on the VA Tech campus last month, painfully raised important issue of mental health for everyone. Think about it: How many times have we thought about mental health as part of our regular health checkups? As the incident posed many questions, we need to come forward to think about how mental health has been neglected in the Asian community. It is vital to encourage hope, to support all the victims, survivors, and families, and to heal their deep wounds, but we truly need to work together pro-actively to find ways to prevent future incidents so that this will never happen again. With this in mind, KALCA KCS-Public Health, KAFSC, KABHA, KAYF, and yKAN will hold a joint forum to discuss the various issues pertaining to mental health in the Korean American community.
I hope that you can join us in this important discussion at this month’s General Meeting.
Yours Truly,
Julie Cho

COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE REPORT by Julie Cho and Domina Park
| WHAT: |
18th Annual The 18th Senior Festival and Community Health Fair |
| WHEN: |
Saturday, May 26, 2007 |
| TIME: |
8:30am-3:30pm. (volunteer for a 4-hour shift or all day!) |
| WHERE: |
Flushing High School 35-01 Union Street at 35th Avenue, Flushing, New York 11354 - located across from YMCA (directions below) |
Happy Parent’s Day (In Korea, Parent’s Day is May 8th)! To commemorate this meaningful day, yKAN will be co-sponsoring and volunteering at the 18th Annual KCS Senior and Health Festival on Saturday, 5/26. This event is being officiated by KCS (www.kcsny.org), which is a non-profit organization that has been serving for the welfare of the New York Korean American Community since 1973. The organization focuses on educating the KA youth and providing social security services for the KA senior citizens. The Senior and Health Festival is one of their many efforts to support these missions. This year will be the 3rd time that yKAN will be contributing to this festival. The Festival will include free entertainment, food, and health fair for the KA senior citizens over the age of 55. KCS is expecting between 1,000 and 1,500 senior citizen participants again this year so they will need plenty of yKAN volunteers.
The 2007 KCS Festival's emphases are on:
- Mutual understanding between Intergeneration
- Free Health Screening and Preventive Education
- Cultural Performance of Seniors and Their Family
This festival will once again provide yKAN with an opportunity to work with various 1st generation KA organizations and a chance for both 1st and 2nd generation KA groups to learn about each other. More importantly, we will receive another opportunity to spend some quality time with the grandparents of our community. In the past, we received great feedback from many of our volunteers stating how rewarding it was to have participated in such a positive cause (and they are returning to volunteer)! Therefore, please keep these in mind when you review the following volunteer hour shifts:
- 8:30 a.m. - 10 a.m. : We need at least 5 volunteers to help set up chairs and tables before the festival begins
- 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. : We also need at least 4 volunteers to serve as ushers to the festival
- 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. : Another set of 4 volunteers to serve lunch and desserts
- 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. : Need at least 6 volunteers to assist with the health fair. You will be asked to help with the registration and crowd control since they are expecting many attendees to this free event
- 3 p.m. –3:30 p.m.: At least 5 volunteers to help clean up and disassemble chairs and tables
You do not need to stick to these shifts and may volunteer for as many or few hours/assignments as you would like.
Please reply Julie Cho at community@ykan.org to let us know you will be attending. Thank you for your time and read on for the directions to Flushing High School.
By Train:
Take the 7 train to the last stop (Flushing, Main St.) Walk up 4 blocks on Main St. toward Northern Blvd. Make a right on Northern Blvd. and a left on Union St. Walk up 1 block to 35th Ave. where Flushing High School is located.
By Car from Manhattan:
Take the L.I.E. and get out at the Main St. exit. Drive straight on Main St. for 2-3 miles. At Roosevelt Ave., make a right turn. Then on Union St., make a left turn. Flushing High School will be on your right hand side.
By Car from NJ:
Take the GW Bridge. Then take the Whitestone Bridge. As you cross the Bridge, stay on the right lane and take the Van Wyck Expressway. Get out about 2 exits down, the exit for Linden Blvd. At the light, make a left. Go straight. At Northern Blvd., make a right turn but merge into left lane because on Main St., you have to make a left turn. Go straight, until you hit 35th Ave., and make a left turn. Go straight up and on your left on Union St. is Flushing High School.
Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Domina Park

APRIL GENERAL MEETING RECAP by Brian Lee
On Friday April 13, 2007, yKAN welcomed members of the West 32nd crew for a panel discussion at the Korean Cultural Service, as well as a networking mixer after-party at Players. West 32nd co-writer Edmund Lee and actors Lanny Joon (Saeng) and Hans Kim (Kyuc), and moderator Lillian Won, led over 50 attendees in an interactive Q&A-style discussion of the origins of West 32nd and what it was like to work on the film.
On May 2, 2007, yKAN also co-hosted the Making of West 32nd panel discussion with The Korea Society. The panel, featuring director Michael Kang and actors Jun Kim and Grace Park, included personal, behind-the-scenes production stories, career advice for Asian American film talent, and information on the prospects for marketing Asian American films internationally.
Thanks to the cast and all of the yKAN members that came out both nights to support the film. We congratulate West 32nd on its performance at the Tribeca Film Festival, and look forward to seeing everyone again soon at one of our upcoming events.
Thanks,
