COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE REPORT
by Domina Park

It was wonderful to see the warm volunteering spirit on January 20th at Anna Erika Assistant Home, SI. The annual yKAN Community Service event helped to welcome the New Year ("Gu Jung"), for both Korean and Chinese residents at Anna Erika.

yKAN would like to sincerely thank all the volunteers who's participation and care brought smiles and energy to the Anna Erika residents. The residents have few opportunities to enjoy Korean cuisine and appreciate the opportunity to get a taste of home. Also, a few rounds of bingo, supplemented with delicious prizes and goodie bags, facilitated by youthful energy, helped to make the event a success.

A heartfelt thanks go to all the wonderful volunteers, especially, Alicia Nam, Angie Chung, Bora Lee, Charles Nam, Daniel Chong, David Camitta, Elizabeth Lee, Helen Nam, Isabel Kim, Jenny Song, John Kim, Jonathan Carfield, Julie Cho, Kate Lee, Raphael Kang, Vivian Jang, Yvonne Kim, and Yeon Jung Kim,. Thanks for your commitment, and kindness in making this event meaningful for the residents at Anna Erika.

Also, we would like to express our gratitude to David Camitta, Daniel Chong, Vivian Jang and Angie Chung for driving a number of our volunteers and supplies.

And finally, much thanks to Bora Lee for delivering the delicious Korean food from NJ!

yKAN Soup Kitchen

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Start off the day of festivities on March 17th at Father's Heart Ministries soup kitchen. yKAN will be volunteering at Father's Heart to help prepare warm meals for those in need.

The Father's Heart Ministries is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization located in the East Village in Manhattan—where countless individuals struggle to make ends meet in the face of an increasingly expensive and gentrified environment. The Father's Heart Ministries is dedicated to restoring dignity and an improved quality of life to the many immigrant, homeless, and low-income individuals in our community. In addition to several programs for its community, the Father's Heart Ministries run a food pantry and soup kitchen where hundreds of children and adults are fed hot meals on a weekly basis, in its efforts to support those in need and to reduce hunger.

Please RSVP for this event by contacting community@ykan.org

Sincerely,
Janet Lee and Domina Park (Designee)

JANUARY GENERAL MEETING RECAP
by Matthew Im

"The year of the Pig and Korean Zodiac" by guest speaker Dr. James Kim

On Thursday, January 25th, 2007, at the Korean American Association of Greater NY (KAAGNY) Main Hall, Dr. James Kim led a detailed conversation into Asian Astrology from its origins to mainstream usage or misuse. He started off by speaking of the development of Korean astrology in respect to Chinese astrology as well as making multiple comparisons to even Greek mythology. Dr. Kim even provided the group with a breakdown of the 4 Different Pillars of Asian Astrology as well as a few of the main literary works on the subject. He then searched the room and used a few brave volunteers to be included in a few astrological readings. After sharing a few laughs he closed the night with his ending point of the evening - astrology has been used to explain many things in life but it shouldn’t be used to predefine ones own existence or to judge others on superficial tendencies.

Thank you to everyone who attended,
Matthew Im

Korean artist SooJin Jeong Exhibits at Agora Gallery (NY) from February 20 to March 13

Soojin Jeong’s work is modern in its execution, but timeless in its themes. Exploring the nature of human beings and their relationship to reality is what Jeong’s work expresses to her viewers most strongly. Jeong’s work carries a message that is both universal and deeply personal; her compositions are simple, yet mysterious. The recurring figures in her work are goats; she places them in different places throughout her canvases. These goats can be interpreted as simple, whimsical flourishes or as lonely representations of the human condition. Either way, Jeong creates a reality for her viewers, which operates on multiple levels. Her work gives a sense of spontaneity and freedom, but also of careful detail and orchestrated construction. She brilliantly gives the effect of effortlessness, while her works are in fact sophisticated renderings of a deeply reflective artist. Soojin Jeong lives and works in New York.

From February 20 to March 13 at Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, Chelsea, New York. Opening hours: 11am-6pm. Reception February 22nd, 6-8 PM.

For more information, visit http://www.agora-gallery.com/ArtistInvite/Soojin_Jeong.aspx.
