MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
by Julie Cho

Hello yKANers,

It’s been awhile since our last newsletter. I hope you are well and getting ready for the holiday season. yKAN has been busy thinking of ideas for the future and we are excited about our upcoming events. I hope that you will all come out and enjoy.

Here are the upcoming events:

Friday, November 16, 2007 – Networking Happy Hour at Maru. Sunday, November 18, 2007 – Community Service Flu Vaccination at Korean Church of Queens. Date TBA – Bowling

Being that Thanksgiving is around the corner, I was thinking about what I am thankful for this year. Personally, I am thankful for all the support from our e-board officers, fellow Korean American organizations, and from YOU! Now, your turn. What are you thankful for? Come out on Friday and share with us!

Thanksgiving is also a time to reflect on the changes, to remember that we, too, grow and change from one season of life to another. Therefore, just last week, yKAN had our annual Unity Gathering in Hoboken, NJ. We didn’t go too far this year, but it was a great time for our e-board members to reflect on our past and to discuss what is planned for yKAN. I thank all the officers who joined that day, taking time from their busy lives to attend a 6-hour meeting! I would especially like to thank Jin Lim for coordinating the Unity Gathering, and Directors Kay Lee and Jayne Jun for the yummy food. We also had new e-board designees joined our family: Jane Kweon and Rachel Kim.

Speaking of expanding our e-board family, in order for yKAN programs and events to function, yKAN's Executive Board (e-board) works very hard to make a great yKAN experience for you. However, WE NEED YOUR HELP! More fresh ideas and man power is needed.

A description of the duties of each office can be found on our website (www.ykan.org/about/committee.html). You can also feel free to contact me at julie@ykan.org. We are looking for team players with energy, enthusiasm and creativity! Even if you are looking to build social/leadership skills, it’s a great place to start! If this describes you and you are interested in helping to shape the direction of yKAN, contact me today! Welcome to the yKAN family and we wish you a very warm happy Thanksgiving.

Yours Truly,
Julie Cho

yKAN-KCS Free Flu Shot Drive

WHERE: The Korean Church of Queens
89-00 23rd Ave., Jackson Heights, NY 11369

Now, yKAN is really trying to warm up this cold season by providing a FREE flu shot event to the Korean-American community. This is our third year volunteering! For this free flu shot drive, yKAN Community Service is partnering with Korean Community Service (KCS) and the Visiting Nurse Services of NY (VNS) with Department of Health. Many thanks to VNS with Department of Health for providing the flu vaccine and their services.

Did you know that Influenza (flu) causes an average of 40,000 deaths each year in the U.S., mostly among the elderly?! Shortage on flu shots affects so many during the flu season every year, so why not help us provide 400 flu shots to the Korean community! Bring your parents, grandparents, and loved ones* to get immune from the flu virus this year! Just make sure that you are not allergic to eggs~ (* Priority of receiving flu shots is 50 yrs old and up. Must be 18 yrs and older)

We are expecting 400+ Koreans to show up during the event and we need about 5-10 volunteers to help fill out flu shot registration forms, lining people, translate questions, and make sure the people sit down for 5 minutes after getting a flu shot. Please contact community@ykan.org for more information.

Sincerely,
Domina Park

Unity Gathering Recap

On Saturday 11/3/07, the yKAN eboard members, board of directors, and members interested in getting more active with yKAN met in Hoboken, NJ for the annual Unity Gathering. The day began with a large lunch, thanks to the board of Directors Jayne Jun, and catching up with each other. From there, everyone reviewed the year, discussed the mission of yKAN, and expressed interests for next year's role in yKAN. The day completed with Trivia Pursuit, Taboo, and a steak dinner, thanks of the board of director Kay Lee.

Thank you to all the people who were able to attend the Unity Gathering.

Thank you,
Jin Lim
