MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
by Julie Cho

Happy Holidays!

Wow. Time Flies! I cannot believe that it is our last newsletter of the year and my last president’s message to all of you. As I prepare to leave my yKAN years behind, I wanted to thank you one last time for the honor of serving you as a member of yKAN's executive board for four amazing years. yKAN feels like a second home to me. I met a lot of people through different events, learned great leadership and networking skills, had so much fun organizing community service programs and events, and made amazing friends who I can count on for a life time. yKAN is not just a young professional organization; it is a place where you can build on your own desires, a meaningful place. Are you curious how all this happened? Just come out to the next yKAN executive board meeting, you will understand!

The year 2007 was another successful year for yKAN! I am pleased to mention just a few of the highlights here.

yKAN held exciting and diverse general meetings, such as: five successful film panels - Michael Kang’s “West 32nd St Film Panel Series,” Fay Ann Lee’s “Falling for Grace” Film screening/panel, Joy Dietrich’s “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” film screening / panel, Chris Chan Lee’s “Undoing” film panel, salsa lessons The Year of the Pig-Korean Astrology,” Financial Planning for Young Professionals”, Korean American Mental Health Forum, etc.

yKAN maintained high attendance, 40-120 members per meeting or event, and expanded new membership through various events with informative guest speakers, film panelists, community service volunteer programs, and social networking events.

yKAN gained more than 1200 yKAN newsletter subscribers, from 900 in the beginning of the year.

yKAN demonstrated good stewardship in the management of our funds in our treasury report.

yKAN obtained corporate sponsorships and individual members’ general donations for annual Valentine’s Day Fundraising event and collaborative program effort at CAPA gala.

yKAN organized diverse community service programs by partnering with Father’s Heart soup kitchen, the Department of Health / Korean Community Services (KCS) to distribute flu shots, the American Cancer Society at the Relay For Life, KCS for their Senior Festival/ Community Health Expo, Anna Erika Nursing Home to visit the elderly residents living there, and the Milal House to make a donation for our annual Christmas Gift Drive.

yKAN developed more strong relationships with various community leaders and organizations to coordinate collaborative projects together.

yKAN appeared and featured in interviews in many Korean newspapers, TV stations, and Radio spots

yKAN was highlighted in Altra, a national Asian American magazine.

yKAN was included in Wikipedia in its own article.

yKAN initiated more interaction with its members on Facebook.

I would like to mention that the above successes would have been impossible without our amazingly talented e-board officers (I will truly miss working with them):

Brian Lee – “The Future yKAN King” – 2008 President! (Thanks for your support, VP!) Isabel Kim – “The Organizer, Executor, and Problem Solver” (Wouldn’t have done anything without you!) Matthew Im – “The Rock Solid yKAN Banker” (Always there when least expected!) John Kim – “The yKAN Spammer and most dedicated long distance runner” (Thanks for spamming and coming out to almost every event from afar.) Jin Lim – “a.k.a. Miss Rigid, Social/Networking guru” (Thanks for always keeping things on track.) Domina Park – “The yKAN Angel” (Thanks for your thoughtfulness.) Dan Jyung – “The yKAN Peace man, Facebook guru” (Love, Peace, and what?) Jane Kweon – “The speediest officer” (Energetic Janey!) Rachel Kim – “The baby of yKAN, the rookie of the year” (The Future Social/Networking guru!)

Also, we are grateful for the support of our Board of Directors, especially our Chairman of the Board, Kay Lee and Director Jayne Jun for their leadership.

Did everyone have a merry holidays?

The Milal Mission at the Korean Church of Queens New York sure had one because of the generosity of our yKAN members this holiday season!

All 52 of the members received gifts of sweaters from the donors.

Special mention should go out to Julie Cho, John Kim, and Matthew Im who made the visit bearing the gifts.

SOCIAL & NETWORKING COMMITTEE REPORT

The new indie film Undoing By Chris Chan Lee, the New York City premiere after party on December 8, 2007 was a great hit that took place at Cabanas in the Maritime Hotel located not only, but at the trendiest spot; the Meatpacking district. Coordinated by Rachel Kim of yKAN in collaboration with BaseNYC the turnout was "the best amongst all the cities they hit around the US" quotes producer Karin Chien. Legendary Russell Wong who also made an appearance in addition to Sung Kang personally contacted R.Kim to thank her for the success of the party and appreciation for the work. Executive Producer Phil Lam and wife also made it to the party after all the time and dedication he had put into the film. Other appearances made were Carl Catch (Manager of Jin and Far East Movement) and Jin (famous Chinese rapper) who came out to support the film. For more information about Undoing, go to www.undoingmovie.com and check it out at a showing near you. For other New York City events please stay connected to yKAN for future events or for further inquiries, please contact Rachel Kim at social@ykan.org.

Thank you,
